are committed activists fighting for social
justice.Description : Participants will discuss organizing strategies and
tactics that they might employ in the struggle for justice. Lessons
drawn from earlier struggles that aimed to build democracy and unity
will also be offered. Topics to be covered will include: building
coalitions and united fronts, mass mobilization, the nature of
organizing traditions, the question of electoral politics, student
organizing, and community organizing.Preparation : As
an activist in some Black political or social movement, each
participant will prepare a brief description of the movement and
their participation in it.
About Dr. Komozi Woodard : Komozi Woodard is a professor of American History,
Public Policy & Africana Studies at Sarah Lawrence College.
Before becoming a professor, Komozi Woodard was an editor, political
activist, elected representative, economic development advisor,
community policy maker, and director of a grassroots urban planning
institution in Newark, New Jersey that put together housing and
community development directed by the local residents, as well as
managing editor of 2 newspapers, a radio program and a children’s
journalism program. As a longtime activist, Woodard has participated
in the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Student Non-violent
Coordinating Committee SNCC), Black Youth Organization (BYO)
[Newark], Congress of African Students, Congress of African People,
the Committee for a Unified Newark (CFUN), the National Black
Political Assembly (NBA), the African Liberation Support Committee
(ALSC), the Black Women’s United Front, the National Black United
Front, and the Black Radical Congress as well as the Hip Hop
Political Convention. Today, he advises NY area organizers about
Katrina fallout. |
