These interactive presentations and discussions are especially
designed for the following cohorts:
1) persons who are already acting as a
caregiver for a loved one-such as spouse, a parent or another
relative;
2) healthy older adults and/or couples
who would like to begin NOW to plan for their own future
eldercare needs and would like to provide continuity and
comfort for adult children who will be requested to carry our their
eldercare decisions; and,
3) Single persons who are the sole
surviving family member.
Description: This seminar will give
participants a step-by-step guide for making appropriate and
informed plans while taking the journey through the care giving
process. Presentations will address the critical elements involved
in making appropriate eldercare plans that are, if possible, based
on the consensus of the family and health care team. The importance
of developing and maintaining honest, and positive communication
channels regarding the care of loved ones will be emphasized. Topics
that will be covered are: the identification and assessment of the
spiritual, health and medical status, family and social supports,
financial and legal issues, living arrangements, and long-term care
needs and options. Self-care exercises and simulations will be
incorporated throughout the seminar.
About Dr. Delores
J. Davis-Penn: Dr. Davis-Penn has over 35 years
experience in designing and conducting gerontology training programs
for the Black elderly at national, state and local levels. She
is the former president and executive director of the National
Caucus and Center on the Black Aged in Washington, D. C. Prior to
her retirement in 1999, Dr. Penn served as Assistant Professor and
was the founding coordinator of the Lincoln University Center on
Minority Health and Aging. Dr. Penn received her Ph.D. and a
gerontology specialist certificate in 1974 from the University of
Michigan. |
